The dreaded Blue Screen of Death—also known as a stop error—is Windows way of telling you something has gone seriously wrong. Your computer crashes to a blue screen with a sad face emoji and an error code. Understanding these errors can help you fix the underlying problem.

What Causes Blue Screen Errors?

BSOD errors occur when Windows encounters a critical error from which it cannot recover. Common causes include:

Common BSOD Error Codes

MEMORY_MANAGEMENT (0x0000001A)

Usually indicates RAM issues. Try removing and reseating memory modules, or run Windows Memory Diagnostic to test for faulty RAM.

DRIVER_IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL (0x000000D1)

A driver is trying to access memory it shouldnt. Update or rollback recently installed drivers, especially graphics and network drivers.

SYSTEM_SERVICE_EXCEPTION (0x0000003B)

Often related to graphics card drivers or antivirus software. Update GPU drivers and temporarily disable antivirus to test.

CRITICAL_PROCESS_DIED (0x000000EF)

A critical Windows system process has terminated. This can be caused by corrupted system files or failing hardware.

UNMOUNTABLE_BOOT_VOLUME (0x000000ED)

Windows cannot read from the hard drive. This may indicate drive failure or corrupted boot files. Back up data immediately if possible.
